“I grew up in Pittsburgh, which is widely known as the Paris of Appalachia. There, a stark juxtaposition became evident to me from a young age: artificial elements like factories, buildings, and transportation infrastructure amid the deciduous Appalachian forest and its undergrowth. My photography focuses on that contrast, how natural light affects artificial shapes, or how artificial structures affect natural landscapes. I believe in the ubiquity of that natural / artificial interplay, and it follows that exceptional images can come from anywhere.”  Brian Joos
